Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter

Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter is a 2014 American drama directed and co-written by David Zellner, starring Rinko Kikuchi. It is a film, not Fortnite's season and not the mobile survival game.

Sundance premiered it on 20 January 2014. Berlin followed on 8 February 2014. United States theaters opened on 13 March 2015. The running time is 104 minutes. Reported box office is $543,894. Rotten Tomatoes shows 88% from 138 reviews. Metacritic shows 68 from 31 reviews. I do not blend those two scores into one.

The story follows a Tokyo office worker who treats the buried cash in Fargo (1996) as a real documentary and travels to North Dakota. Writers connect that plot to the urban legend around Takako Konishi. Filming took place in Minnesota and Tokyo. The Octopus Project wrote the score and won the Sundance U.S. Dramatic special jury award for music.

A tenth-anniversary theatrical return opened in the U.S. on 22 March 2024, with video on demand on 2 April 2024. On 5 November 2026 a U.S. JustWatch reading listed JustWatch TV Plus, ad-supported copies on Fandango at Home, the free YouTube movies shelf, and Plex, plus rent or buy on Amazon, Apple TV, and Fandango.

Nobuyuki Katsube and Shirley Venard are the other names in the public cast line beside Kikuchi. I am not writing an ending explanation that guesses what Zellner meant. The film is the work. The mobile game that shares two of these words is a different product with its own download page.

If you searched because of a game screenshot, go to the survival guide. If you searched for a place to watch the movie, use the JustWatch list above and expect it to move.
